Primus - Green Naugahyde
As an old school Primus fan, I am rather excited about this new CD (I just picked it up today) Thus far, I have only dhelved into the first few tracks and I must say I am impressed.
Being an old school fan, one of my FAVORITE musicians in their lineup was Tim (Herb) Alexander (when it came to his style for their older material)
Suck on this - Brilliant but raw.
Frizzle Fry - Brilliant and much more polished.
(Misc Debris) - Brilliant interpretation of others material.
Sailing the Seas of Cheese - Inching towards mainstream commercialism. I think this is where the Herb/Primus disconnect started.
Pork Soda - More commercial/Radio friendly than all other albums previously. Still good.
Tales From the Punchbowl - Felt like they were experimenting too much to get that 'old spark' back. (Last album with Herb)
Brown Album - First effort with Brain. And while he could play Tim's parts to a T, he lacked the creative finesse that Herb brought to the table.
Antipop - Another effort with a puzzle piece that didnt quite fit right. (Sorry Brain - You are much better suited for GnR)
Animals Should Not Try To Act Like People - Primus should not try to act like musicians. This was (IMO) by far the worst effort from them I have heard to date. The creative spark with Tim Alexander had beyond fizzled, a valiant effort that fell way short. (Thank goodness it was only 5 tracks)
Green Naugahyde introduces (once again) Jay Lane and that familiar backbeat that compliments the already complex bass patterns Les is hashing out. And the out in left field guitar that Ler provides (but still so fits)
I feel that their creative juices are flowing again and the right players are in place to 'make it happen' again. Just in the first few tracks, it has that "old school" Primus feel to it, but in a much more mature and refined package.
At first, I was rather skeptical of whether Jay was the right person to fill the shoes of Alexander. But his creativity and style more than compliment the sound that many a fans have come to know and love.
