Cheesecake is a pie for the following reasons:
1. It has a crust. Cake doesn't have a crust
2. It has a filling. Some cakes have fillings, sure. But ALL pies do.

pie filling is generally premade prior to the pie. cheesecake is a soupy mess before you bake it.

Would you classify Pumpkin pie as a pie?
I would, and I feel that cheesecake fits in the same general pie category as pumpkin pie.
