Trestles is good. The tour stops there so it's a world class break. There's lots of good spots though. Blacks beach is another.

I like tower 25 in Del Mar, good for my son to learn at too..

that's a pretty tough question. Scripps is pretty good for beginners, it is crowded but the people are pretty mellow. Go at around 0700 in the morning and anywhere is good, provided the tides are with you...good luck
