Well, first i congradulate bush on going to war w/ iraq, finally a president that has balls. His followup to the war, the rebuilding of iraq, is not heavily planned out.
Second the media as we all know plays a big part on what we see and hear. They're doing their job covering the war, and i think bush's hype for attacking war positive as compared to what has been seen recently. If we were to get rid of the media how many people would actually know that a war had started, or how many would know that it has ended?
So lets pretend there is no media coverage on the Iraq war, and only attainable knowledge is through our own people. We could expect wild talk about the war, rumors, gossip on what is goign to happen for the first couple of months. Would the economy get worse? I think it prolly would because no one would have a clear idea if USA knows what the hell it's doing. Now.....three months later maybe? Almost all of the general public has forgotten about the war, and assume everything is ok, considering we haven't had another 911. Would economy better? I think so..more ma & pa shops would have a positive outlook, hire more ppl to work, offer incentives, or whatever. So...economy on a local level would be good.
Now bush's escape to use the media as the source of the economy's failure is ..a paradox, the media makes the economy bad; the economy is good because of the media. It shows his lack for what is really going on, and the source of the real problem.
As for those hippies....they died a long time ago..all we have now are a bunch of hypocrytes. People who will protest because it's cool, and then once it has already begun go back to playing dungeons and dragon. They should be called hyppos, hypocrtical hippes.

I'm extremely bitter. I despise the administration. Bush is pure evil. Like you, MA, I was appalled when Bush tried to pin the economy on the media.. but then I'm appalled pretty much every day by the audacity of the administration and by the populace who can't (or won't) see past the BS to see what a phony this man is...
forget the yellowcake scandal, just in the past few months, Bush or his minions have claimed to have found the WMD (not true), he has claimed that the reason we went to Iraq was that Saddam wouldn't let the inspectors in.. of course they were there already when we went in.. lets see what else.. and I specifically remember him saying before the war that 'saddam is the only person who is pressing this war'.. of course now he says it was the media but really it was him and his cronies all along..
most of all he is a phony, a fake, and a charlatan.. here's a really interesting article that elaborates this a little more..
I don't think that anyone with a reasonable knowledge of Saddam's Iraq will dispute that the Iraqi people are better off now. As for Bush's stated reasons for making war, I think that we merely joined the war already in progress; that of Saddam against his own country. Unfortunatly, nothing much in life is black and white, and we have made our share(and then some) of gaffes and screwups. However, I think that we have improved the lives of many opressed Iraqi's, enough to offset the mistakes we have made. I believe that our intentions were honorable, despite the claims of a war for oil. As for our men and women of the armed forces getting killed one by one now, would you really have us run away now and leave the Iraqi's holding the bag?? Don't suggest the French, it'l just be their soldiers getting killed. Bush is making the best of a very difficult situation. It's easy enough to sit here at home and armchair quarterback, much harder when you have a country looking to you for guidance and direction. History has shown that many of our revered heros were in the end, very much human. So it is with Bush. May the good things he has accomplished outshine his mistakes.
JHodges...I hear ya. It's the most blatent "bait & switch" (as GWB would call it) in the history of American politics.
First, flat-out feeding the American media news clips (from the White House Press Office) and pro-war propiganda before he declared war, while all the time maintaining a vigilant White House media appeal (organized by CFNBC, an offshoot of NBC and Time Warner Broadcasting) to the public that Saddam was indeed an immediate threat, and later..when evidence of the threat is non-existant.....he turns his finger-shaking to the same media that he conjolled into helping him promote and sell this sham. This part, of course, was planned.
Think about it: blame an entity that won't die, is so multifaceted and far reaching that no single one party can be held liable, and the impact is absorbed into oblivion. It's like choking on water then standing on the seashore and shouting obcenities at the ocean while stomping the beach. Shucking responsibility for the state of the economy while declaring his solem responsibility,... "I take full responsibility in every word I say." So the questionable intelligence was boffo, and he takes responsibility for it how? The same data that was offered to the international community as sound evidence that the US must seek immediate action and suspend the inspections? Yes.
If folks want to explain away the facts of the matter so they can sleep better, so be it, but what occured most certainly won't change by looking at it in a mirror. He manipulated and lied - fact. And if the international community wasn't so freaked out by Bush's egotism and "no-fear" attitude they might even try to open conversation about what has gone on. Thank god Tony Blair is being held accountable by parliment.
To anyone, anyone who questions if this was based in ligitimacy, listen to the ongoing review of the International Community on why NOW Bush has declined to sign on and participate in the International Criminal Court. He has actually nullified the United States' signature on the Rome Statute. In so doing, the administration withdrew U.S. support for the creation of the ICC and asserted the exclusion of U.S. citizens from the ICC's jurisdiction. Meaning that: ANY US citizen, period, cannot be tried or held accountable for anything done within the jurisdiction of .....the world....no matter the severity of the action or enormity of repercussion - short of someone declaring war. Which, George did...all by his lonesome eh.
Anybody who uses the Supreme Court to steal the presidency certainly wouldn't think twice about using the media to boil the blood of Americans for war and later poke his finger back in the eye of the almighty media to blame and berate them for ethically questionable coverage and hype that somehow drove the economy into the gutter?
If you buy that then you also subscribe to the belief that America has never mistreated any little country before, ever, for any reason, and that we're just one huge loveable band of brothers trying to rid the world of all of the demon "evil-doers", who most undoubtedly are all "born sinners."
Wake up America, your name is being drug through the mud.

By the way, I'm angry and embarrassed to have bought into the whole war thing towards the final moment. I support the men and women who are doing what they are told to do. I do not wish them killed or them to kill. I do not support the administration who has placed them in harms way.
I have credible information that things are not what they seem...ei; a close friend who is a Four Star General in the US Air Force, and a Captian in the Army who is currently participating in the search and verification of WOMD in Iraq this very minute (A San Martian too). The Army Captian is also the Commanding Officer in Charge of the Southwest/East/SouthCentral quadrant for Bio-Terrorist response Action and resides right here in our own little town of San Marcos.
Before he left for Iraq last month, he had a going away party. I attended and was shocked to find six members of a science team recently arrived from six months in Iraq, ready to depart with the Captian and be retrained for bio-detection in the field. What they had to say was simply stunning, and I'd wager that the US & English shared responsibility of rebuilding Iraq has much more to do with oil than we'd care to hear about.

One last post, and I think I'll let this dead horse go unbeaten. While I aknowledge that mistakes have been made, calling our president pure evil is not only factually inaccurate, it is personally very offensive. If you are seeking an example of pure evil, try searching in Germany around 1939...
Yeah, don't fret over it - I just get bothered about this and let steam off. That's why I really appreciate this forum. Anyway, yes....calling Bush pure evil is much like HIM calling leaders of other countries pure evil, evil doers, and inhuman - factually inaccurate and historically comparable to similar speeches given around 1939.
