I'm still learning about the West. Salmon come all the way inland to Idaho to spawn? Impressive.

Say the dams were located in Idaho. Enough to supply the needs of far more than just Idaho. Wouldn't a spawning salmon have hundreds of miles of alternatives or are they plain picky? At Bonneville Dam on the Columbia you get to watch fish pass you thru a window into whatever passes for a fish ladder. The fish are terrified of the people but show little concern for the ladder.

Mine varies greatly with technology usage. Electricity here, now is .06762 per KWH for Allegheny power. It's the stupid Transmission Charge, 3.22, Customer Distribution Charge 5.00, and KWH Distribution Charge 14.19 that brings a 46.00 bill to $70.00, bull**** huh? I don't even get a complimentary reach around, or packet of Vaseline...

The heat pump is a geothermal unit,
Welcome Doc, I have what may be a silly question but your mention of a geothermal heat pump might fit with an idea I have.

Driving East from Eugene Oregon (pop. 160,000) you almost immediately begin to climb the Cascades over McKenzie Pass. Near the top are popular free & woodsy hot springs and a bath house. Other thermal springs dot the Cascades.

This tells me energy in the forms of heat and possibly steam lie near the surface and might be something we could tap into. I'm wondering if drilling down near but not into the source might get you enough heat to pipe hot water (or steam) downhill to Eugene for utilities use. The water source (snow or snowmelt) may be seasonal but then so might the need be seasonal. Either way there is snow on many of these mountains late into the Summer.

As you can see in the picture the thermal hot spots lie parallel to most of the state's population.

I don't know anything about geothermal heat pumps but had wondered if something (like a heat pump) could extract this energy in a usable form?

Back East we had mountains but these are a string of volcanoes and as such they're untapped energy sources.

Colorado Springs - Colorado Springs Utilities -
Water - 86 CF x $0.0251 = $2.16 + service charge of 29 day x $0.3789 =$10.99 = $13.15
Waste Water - 86CF x $0.0246 =$2.12 + service charge of 29 day x $0.5029 = 14.72 = $16.89
Electric: Access charge: 673 kwh $0.0561 ($37.76)+ Supply char 673 kwh x $0.0269 ($18.10)+ Access chg 29 x $0.31 ($8.99) + ECA 511 kwh $-0.002 ($1.02cr) + 162 kwh x $0.0112 ($0.49) + 673kwh x $0.0112 ($7.54) = $71.86
Gas: access chg 29 x $0.3052 ($8.85) + access chg 22ccf x 0.1396 ($3.07) + gas cost 22 ccf x $0.6034 (13.27) = GCA 22 ccf x $-0.55 = (1.21 cr) = $23.98

My utilities are $.09 a kilowatt hour. The average in Houston is $.12 a kilowatt hour. My average summertime bill for a month is around $200-250 depending on the temperature. We have had close to 30 consecutive days of over 90F degree days so my bill will be on the high side of the range. Water runs about $35 a month on average, depending on how much we water the yard. House is 2184 Sqft Built in 1972. Upgraded with new energy efficient windows and doors and attic insulation, furnace and air conditioning system.

I agree with other posters, that you need to give more rigid guidelines for your questions, or you will be comparing apples to oranges. Ask what they pay per kilowatt hour, whether they live in a home or apartment. Age of their home and whether they have been upgraded.
