Indianapolis, eh? I'm not sure what the weather is like there, but it can be somewhat entertaining here, particularly in winter. Being right by the lake, Webster often doesn't get hit too badly with snow -- the lake effect tends to hop over it and dump on areas farther south. I think you'll like the autumn colors around here.
By way of an intro, I'm 45, married with a son starting his last year of high school, and work in software development at Xerox. Do you have friends or family up here who can help point you to things to see, places to eat, etc.?
Married, 41, 2 sons 15yo freshman and 11yo 6th grader, wife is a school teacher still back in Indiana until our house sells and/or she gets hired out here.
It's difficult finding weather data for my location, as you said it varies so much a few miles one way or another. I'm researching weather stations and plan on putting my data up on Wunderground.com. As near as I can tell Indy and Webster have nearly identical winter average mean temperatures. Looking out now at 20 knot sustained winds with 40 knot gusts. We don't get so many "Small Craft Advisories" back in Indy. I'm really looking forward to winter. Previous to Indy we lived in the Phoenix area for 12 years.. No so much like winter out that way.. but I grew up in Conn. and my wife went to college in Maine so we've seen and experienced a pretty wide range of crappy weather.
We are working on the friend thing, family lives in Plattsburgh, Conn and VT, just far enough,
These are in no particular order. There are a ton of places to eat in and around Rochester. This is a far-from-complete list of some pretty good places to try:

Olive's - Very good Greek food and wine selection - in Schoen Place in Pittsford
Sinbad's - Excellent Middle-Eastern/Mediterranean food - on Park Ave in the city near Berkeley St.
Jine's - A very upscale diner-style place with excellent food and good prices - on Park Ave in the city near Berkeley St.
Cibon - Great sandwiches, wine selection and dessert - on Park Ave in the city near Berkeley St.
Guido's Pasta Villa - Fantastic Italian food -- much better than the many "Italian" restaurants around - in Irondequoit on E. Ridge Road
Monte Alban - Pretty authentic Mexican food (so say friends from Arizona), very good - in Webster on Empire Blvd and in Irondequoit on E. Ridge Road
Sunrise - Very, very good Japanese food - On Jefferson Road in Henrietta
Lindburgers - Outstanding burgers - Rt 441 and Rt 250 in the plaza next to Lisa's Liquor Barn (also a worthwhile visit)
Pontillo's - Arguably the best pizza in the area, but ONLY the one in Bushnell's Basin on Rt 96

Sticky Lips - Outstanding BBQ, good prices - in the city on Culver
Dinosaur Grill - Also outstanding BBQ - in the city on Court St.
If you prefer cooking your own food, might I recommend the Wegman's in Pittsford on Monroe Ave. If they don't have what you need (very unlikely), I also suggest you stop by the Public Market on North Union Street. Google it and check the hours. We usually go early on Saturday morning (by early, I mean 6:00am or so before the crowds form).
Wow, what a great list.. Thanks Brian.. I'll be saving the list.. Wegman's here in Webster is a great store, very similar to The Marsh stores in Indy. A little expensive but very high quality meats and produce.
My step brother lives in Buffalo and visits regularly, he brought me to the public market a few weeks ago.. Pretty cool and entertaining for people watching.. I just love the "United Socialist Worker Party" guys handing out propaganda.. I've seen a public market here in Webster behind Golden Boys and the firehouse but haven't checked it out yet.
Yes, the Holt Road Wegmans is very nice. But if you haven't been to the one in Pittsford, go. You'll understand when you get there. The quality at that store tends to be somewhat higher than at other stores and the selection is really good.
There are also a bunch of farm markets to get better fresh produce cheaper.
You'll find all kinds of very entertaining people -- freakshows and not -- at the Public Market. If you get there early enough, you miss the crowd and can more easily walk past all the tables. Good stuff!
I'm not familiar with the market in Webster. If you find out when it is, let me know -- I'd like to check it out.
